What Are Vocal Effects?
Vocal Effects can mean anything that is purposely added to the ‘clean’ voice as an intentional additional sound – such as distortion, metal screams. growls, fry scream, tuva, overtones and more. The secret is to ensure you have a strong, balanced and healthy clean singing voice before adding any grit or rasp. Everyone has a different setup so get ready to develop your own signature sound!
Are Vocal Effects Dangerous or Damaging?
Vocal Effects were once seen as dangerous for the voice, and some might say that not all voices are robust enough to scream night after night… but voice effects are in fact everyday sounds we can access quite naturally via human emotions, images and kinaesthetic awareness. What’s more, modern research appears to show that rough vocal sounds can be implemented in a totally healthy way. It is often the underlying singing control and technique that causes potential issues – NOT the effects!
By applying everyday noises in context, you’ll find out how a simple sigh can become a metalcore grunt!
